Details about Sean's Deployment

Sean will be leaving for Iraq by mid August. He will leave around a week before his scheduled arrival time and will be traveling for 72-120 hours by the time he gets to Balad. Balad is an Army base north of Baghdad. Sean will be stationed there because the Air Force's 332nd Expeditionary Medical Group (EMDG) heads up the base hospital.

The Intensive Care Unit where Sean will work has three units; ICU 1 is for U.S. and coalition forces. ICU 2 is predominately for Iraqi pediatric patients and civilians. ICU 3 is for Iraqi army, police, and detainees. He will work 12 hour shifts of 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am. The work schedule is 9 days on and 1 day off, and everyone is always available for re-call at all times. Sean will have 3 days of orientation with the person he is replacing.

The hospital will be moving to a new medical facility on base shortly after Sean arrives. This has been extensively planned for in the hospital, and the ICU, but it will be stressful. The entire hospital staff will be involved in the moving process.

Living quarters on base are shared between 2 people and have a bed, a bed-side chest with 3 drawers, a lamp and a standing locker for each occupant. Bathroom trailers (called Cadillacs) are available for showering and toilets. There are also Porta-Potties set about the housing areas for quick use.

Gyms, a swimming pool, a movie theater, a general store (PX), a cafe and laundry service are all available on base. Mail services are also provided. You can mail Sean at the address below:

Thank you very much for all this great detail, Dani! We now have Sean's Iraq address in MS Access. So, we will have no excuse for not writing! Will Sean have access to e-mail, too?

We'll be praying for both of you! Thanks again, Dani!

Love you both! Uncle LD & Aunt Jackie

That is going to be quite a work schedule!! He will certainly need rest when he's not on duty. I hadn't realized it was Balad he was goint to. Somehow, I thought the hospital was in Baghdad.

Dad looked up Camp Balad on the Internet and saw that Sean will also have access to Subway and Pizza Hut!!

Is it seeming more real now that more details are coming?

We are so proud of Sean, and of you too for encouraging him in a noble cause!

Love, Mom and Dad

Sean will have access to email as well, and he will also be able to check for comments (like this one) on our website blog. Just more ways to make it easy for everyone to let him know they are thinking about him. :)

Mine seems like a pretty small contribution compared to the guys that I will be taking care of while I'm over there (our injured troops). I do appreciate the sentiment. It means alot that I (and Dani) are on your mind. The crazy thing is, getting accepted to CRNA school is what's most on my mind these days.

Sean, stay safe and out of harms way. My brother is still in Samarra (about an hour north of Baghdad). He is 82nd Airborne and has been over there since last August. He should be home in mid to late Oct. Haven't heard from you in a while, congratulations on your progress towards CRNA. Hope everything is going well for you guys. Give me a call if you still have my number. Oh yeah we had a little girl in Feb, Addison. She is good as is Austin, and Donna.

WOW! There it all is and off you'll be going very, very soon. We will all be thinking of you and praying for you. It will be a difficult task to care for our wounded soldiers, and for Danielle to see you go.

Thank you for caring for our troops--the work you are doing will impact lives of soldiers and their families. We are glad they will be in your very capable hands. We all appreciate your service on behalf of all of us. Thank you, Danielle, for your offering of your husband's capable hands and skills to our country as well. It is your sacrifice too.

God bless you both--

Melinda
