Details about Sean's Deployment

Sean will be leaving for Iraq by mid August. He will leave around a week before his scheduled arrival time and will be traveling for 72-120 hours by the time he gets to Balad. Balad is an Army base north of Baghdad. Sean will be stationed there because the Air Force's 332nd Expeditionary Medical Group (EMDG) heads up the base hospital.

The Intensive Care Unit where Sean will work has three units; ICU 1 is for U.S. and coalition forces. ICU 2 is predominately for Iraqi pediatric patients and civilians. ICU 3 is for Iraqi army, police, and detainees. He will work 12 hour shifts of 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am. The work schedule is 9 days on and 1 day off, and everyone is always available for re-call at all times. Sean will have 3 days of orientation with the person he is replacing.

The hospital will be moving to a new medical facility on base shortly after Sean arrives. This has been extensively planned for in the hospital, and the ICU, but it will be stressful. The entire hospital staff will be involved in the moving process.

Living quarters on base are shared between 2 people and have a bed, a bed-side chest with 3 drawers, a lamp and a standing locker for each occupant. Bathroom trailers (called Cadillacs) are available for showering and toilets. There are also Porta-Potties set about the housing areas for quick use.

Gyms, a swimming pool, a movie theater, a general store (PX), a cafe and laundry service are all available on base. Mail services are also provided. You can mail Sean at the address below:
