San Antonio Missions National Park

Recently we visited San Antonio Missions National Park as part of some activity we planned for Dan & Elaine's (Dani's folks) recent visit to San Antonio. We were sort of at a loss for what to do as we had already taken them to the usual sites during past visits. Anyway we googled SA tourism and came across this. It was a great find. The park is several separate missions spread around the southern part of SA. If you are ever looking for something to take up a day in SA check this out. Lots of great photo subjects.

We decided to go see the Spanish Missions sort of on a whim, and I'm so glad we did! They were so beautiful and peaceful. The missions used to be a whole walled-in community complete with grainary, church, crafts work areas, etc for people during frontier days. The cool thing is that the churches are still maintained and functioning with priests who live there and lead weekly services. The Espada Mission even has a whole group of Franciscan monks living there. The living areas for the priests and monks are all marked in order to maintain their privacy. It was all very interesting and well worth the visit!

Yes, it was well worth out time! It was so interesting to get an idea of how these missions were used. The monks felt responsible for the safety and well-being of Indians they ministered to and the missions were a shelter for them. They had gardens and pastures outside the walls, but the food and water were within the walls. Thanks for taking us there Danielle and Sean!

Thank you, Sean & Danielle, for this interesting account and the good pictures! Although we live not too far from San Antonio, we still have not toured these missions. We have known about them for years, but now I think we might take some guests there and see them ourselves. Thanks! You made me want to see them!

Love,
Aunt Jackie
